Exciting new Book

The long wait is nearly over! On March 1st 2012 Phoenix from the ashes will be published by Bloomsbury.

We weren’t the most likely people to build a boat; we weren’t the most likely people to live on one for seven years - we weren’t even the most likely people to lose our house in a fire ... yet here is the story of how all of these things happened, and of the people that we met.

Written not just for readers who love sailing, or for tree-whittling boat builders - nor even just for people thinking of setting fire to their houses - it was written for people who love life.

You can pick it up ...but you won’t be able to put it down.

If you love someone who loves the sea give them a gift of art!

During seven years living on a classic boat I became seeped in the salty atmosphere of working boats, timber, rope, and sail cloth. The smells and the sounds of the sea are just a breath away in these evocative limited-edition prints, and original artworks.

Is your child a budding artist ?

Drawing is such a lovely thing - it gives hours of entertainment, costs next to nothing, and is so rewarding. We all love to express ourselves, and art is as natural a way of doing that as speaking. It only takes a little practice - come and see how simple it is!

Sailor’s talk...

a leisurely sail through the anchorage

There’s more than one way to skin a cat... During years of living aboard, constant engine trouble landed us in some alarming circumstances, yet by a combination of good luck and doing things like the old-timers we managed to squeak out of trouble without drowning anyone; or sinking anything.  ‘Sailors talk’ is the area of this site which contains a series of sailing magazine articles - which have mostly appeared in Classic Boat’ - which deal with some of the lost arts of sailing. The topic at the moment is Handling a boat under sail at close quarters - arriving in harbour with no brakes. Remind yourself of how they did it in the olde days; do a little daydreaming; and then try it yourself next time you’re on the briney!
