The Forefoot

Until quite recently the remains of this lovely old vessel lay on the beach in the Percuil river, Cornwall, just up river from the St Mawes Sailing Club. Someone must have had a bit of a tidy-up because last time I looked, in 2006, it had gone. Top centre of the image, you will notice that the gun whale and the deck shelf - the timbers which run the length of the vessel at the top of the frames, have both broken...it would not have been long until the boat was laid flat on the beach showing her ribs like a smoked-kipper. The stem, the timber to which the rope is tied, had weathered so that the wood had become a sculpture of deeply fissured grain. It is my most popular, best selling image.

Original - Available from The Waterside Gallery, St Mawes, Cornwall: www.watersidegallery.co.uk where it is on exhibition. If you would like it sent to you - please let me know by clicking here.
