Reefing Pennant

These necklaces of rope look great hanging in graceful curves below the cracked wooden cleat and the Boom. It puts me in mind of a boat that has just arrived in port after a long sail and the crew are just about to settle down to well-earned dram. It must have been that thought that made me redraw the image for one of my Islay Whisky images.  You would normally only see this kind of cleat and boom on an older craft. Owners of newer wooden vessels are careful to varnish the wood which prevents it from drying out quite like this. However, this boom is on my boat - and I like to see cracks or shakes, as they are known! They don’t affect the strength of the timber...though it does allow water to pool, and the life of the timber will be shortened. Good job it’s Larch.
