Fisher Girl
Walter Langley, a water colourist who knew Cornish fising villages well, and painted around the year 1900, depicted a scene of which this is a detail I really like. I remember the winches from my own childhood further along the coast in Sussex, still in use in the 1970’s, though built from cast iron. I think it’s the nostalgia that I like about this image - harping back to a simpler - though more precarious - time; when so much depended upon the catch ...and life was governed by the tides, and the season.
