The idea for the design of each piece of furniture is often suggested by the wood itself. I usually spend a day planning and working out how to incorporate a natural feature of the wood so that it can be admired within the finished structure.
Furniture has to be built to perform its function time and time again - this means that consideration is given to where the stresses will occur, and how these will be distributed, affecting timber sizing and the style of joints - even the type of glue used.

Wide boards, curved boards, or boards with twist or shake are full of character, but are difficult to put through machines to ‘convert’ in one whole piece. You will notice a lot of furniture made from narrow strips of wood - perhaps even from badly matched off-cuts - quick to machine, but sometimes a bit mean looking.
It is time-consuming to prepare large boards by hand - planing, or sanding them to achieve a finish; but the result is always worth it. Distinctive furniture, hand-crafted from the tree, by someone who isn’t in a hurry, looks feels and is different from mass-produced laminated furniture, built to a price.
And in the unfortunate circumstance that your furniture becomes damaged by heat, wet, oil, or impact - don’t worry, solid wood can be sanded unlike chipboard, laminate or print. It will still be the same piece of wood a hundred years from now!
ordering furniture
When you need a piece of furniture, tell me what your ideas are, how big it should be, and what kind of styles you like. I will try to find suitable timber, and sketch the appearance of the piece for you to peruse; at the same time I should be able to give you some idea of the price. I’m not always bang-on, but I am keen that you get the furniture you want, at the price you wish to pay. If you tell me that the cost mustn’t go beyond such and such a figure - it won’t.
It would help me a lot if you let me know what you are after a little while before you actually need it delivered... six weeks wouldn’t be too long.
delivery
Furniture can be delivered anywhere in the UK. Here on the isle of Islay we have an efficient haulier who has been making deliveries to the mainland everyday for forty years. They take packages to their depot in Glasgow to be met by UK Mainland carrier. When we know the approximate size and weight of the furniture you are interested in ordering, we can get a good idea of the delivery charge.
payment
Payment can be made by cheque or by electronic transfer via your online bank. For payment by cheque you will find the address here. For payment by electronic transfer you will need my bank details supplied on request.
your guarantee
If for any reason you decide you don’t want to keep/accept your furniture we will receive it back without question and return your money. We want to know that it will give you pleasure everyday, for life, and will remedy any fault which prevents it from doing so.
