Boom Cleat
Folds of canvas sail-cloth bunted up above a wooden boom which has dried over time and shows the deep ‘shakes’ familiar to us from the days of wooden boats. A varnished appearance was impractical for a working boat - instead linseed oil would be brushed liberally into the splits to preserve the wood, filling the air with a lovely smell. Here necklaces of rope have been hurriedly hung around a boom cleat; its Friday, and the tavern is already open.
